When you first pull up to Achadipura Homestay in Kottayam, your eye naturally catches the sweeping, sloping roofline. It's the picture-perfect image of traditional Kerala architecture, beautiful and grand. But this clay-tiled roof is doing more than just looking lovely—it’s the true, unsung hero of your comfort, working silently to turn our century-old house into a naturally cool sanctuary.

Designed by Grandparents, Engineered by Climate
Achadipura’s roof is a brilliant piece of tropical engineering, a design perfected long before air conditioning was a concept. Our entire roof is covered in traditional clay tiles. They’re set in an interlocking pattern and pitched at a steep angle (30-40 degrees)—a masterclass in passive cooling inherited from our forebears.
Here’s how this magic works:
The Natural AC: Forget the notion that concrete is best. This thick layer of terracotta is an incredible insulator. The clay material doesn’t absorb and radiate the sun’s intense heat; it acts as a thermal barrier, keeping the scorching Kerala sun far away from your living space.
The Breathable Gap: The high pitch isn’t just decorative. It creates a generous air cushion between the tiles and the inner ceiling. This gap allows hot air to rise, circulate, and escape, ensuring the interior of our Kottayam heritage homestay remains blissfully cooler than the humid air outside.
A Monsoon Serenade: And when the famous Kerala monsoon arrives? There is nothing cozier. The rhythmic patter-patter on the clay tiles transforms a heavy downpour into the most peaceful, natural sound machine, enhancing that sense of secluded calm.

A Piece of Living History and Sustainable Kerala Life
This roofing style isn't some historical novelty; it’s a living testament to the sustainable living wisdom of this region. It was absolutely essential for a comfortable life in the "Land of Letters, Latex, and Lakes" before modern cooling systems existed.
While we certainly provide modern amenities—yes, our spacious rooms have AC!—many guests tell us they prefer the natural, ambient coolness the tiled roof provides during the day. It’s a truly authentic, eco-friendly experience of a life lived in balance with nature.

Look Up—You're in Achadipura
The roof ties our home directly to the beautiful surroundings. The distinctive, weathered, reddish-brown clay hues perfectly complement the lush greenery of our rubber plantation property.
When you settle down on the Poomukham (the traditional front portico) or our long Verandah with your morning coffee, take a moment to look up. You’re not just looking at beams and tiles; you are looking at a structural blend of Indian and Colonial style, a piece of history that continues its quiet, hard work every day to ensure your stay at Achadipura Homestay is nothing short of tranquil and refreshingly cool.
